About Medicaid ICP

Medicaid ICP can cover up to 100% of long-term care in a Medicaid Certified Facility

Statistics show that eventually someone in your family will need a nursing home. According to a recent study conducted by Met Life and published by US News, over 40% of people over age 65 will need a period of care in a nursing home with the average length of stay just under 2 ½ years or over 5 years for a nursing home resident with Alzheimer's or dementia.

Why are these statistics important?

The question for most of us and our loved ones, is not if, but when, and “how can we afford the expense.”

How Medicaid ICP Helps

“ICP” stands for Institutionalized Care Program. It is a program that helps people pay for skilled nursing home care.

  • Medicaid will pay up to 100% of the cost of long term skilled care in a Medicaid Certified facility for those have a medical necessity for skilled care and who have income and assets levels below Medicaid's qualification guidelines.
  • The income of the institutionalized individual is also used to pay the nursing home and is referred to as “patient responsibility” minus a $35 personal needs allowance.
  • In some instances, a small additional amount may be allowed (Veteran’s special compensation for aid and attendance, spousal diversion income for married individuals, and some health insurance supplements).
  • In most cases, spouses and their families are burdened with additional costs, such as, personal needs, travel expenses, home maintenance, outstanding debt and a myriad of other expenses that Medicaid does not consider and that a $35 monthly personal allowance will not begin to cover.

Protect and Preserve the Assets of an Institutionalized Person

Medicaid planning plays a crucial role in protecting and preserving the assets of an institutionalized person before they have “spent down” their assets to qualify for Medicaid.
